Charles Darwin
At the age of 22, Charles Darwin joined the crew of the HMS Beagle as the ship's naturalist in order to make field observations and collect plants and animals throughout the voyage. In 1831, the Beagle embarked on a five year expedition to South America and the South Sea islands. While exploring the Galapagos Islands, approximately 1000 km west of Ecuador, Darwin noted slight variations among similar species of organisms from island to island. From these observations, Darwin wrote and published "On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection" in 1859.
